Does anyone have a recommendation for good 6 1/2" seperates that can handle up to 250w r.m.s.? Thanks.

250 rms per each side??? If so that would be some mean speakers. Cant think of any that handle that much off hand.

its going to be near impossibe to find speakers that handle that much truthfully. There will be speaker manufactures that bullsh*t, but in all honesty, you only need speakers in the 50 watt rms range, just feed them clean signals and they will get louder than you need, trust me.
Heres a good example. Alpine's F1 status speakers are 50 wrms 250 peak.....$3000 later
Its not the power handleing, its the quality of speaker

I've got a Rockford 500s ( 125x2 @ 4ohm) hooked up to 2 Rockford audiophile 6 1/2" that are probably close to 7 years old now. Although they were carefully stored until recently, I think I can definately do better. Budget? ~ $250-$300. Thanks.

Clean, Quality Power! and carefully selected x-over freq. and slopes don't hurt. Running 2 pair of 6.5" Audax Mid/Bass in each door off a Hifonics Series 7 Zeus (2x450W)for 5 years and still work perfect. Drivers are rated @ 80W. True, power is divided between drivers but that's still 225W per. Spent hours changing xover freq and slopes for the right combination.
"Too much" power can be tamed. The volume adjust turns counter clockwise too. Headroom is a good thing. Under power speakers, clipping the amp, or expecting to much low end out of small speakers will blow all speakers!
Don't get caught up in the power rating game. Too many manufactures are making claims they cannot possible fullfill! Buy Smart

Adding: intensem1rider listed an example using the Alpine F1 Status system at @ $3K. If you know high end drivers, Alpine is using Scan-Speak. Enough said. If you can get these incredibily deep mounting speakers in your doors, Great. Due to the track record and quality of these components I would feed them min. 500W a channel off a Tru Technology, X-tant or Zapco.
Efficiency is a big factor.If you need serious output double the same driver, adding 3 db output effiency! If you can get 93db 1W 1M VS 87 db 1W 1M You will need less than half the amp power for the same output! Ohms Law is fact! no matter what is stamped on the outside of the box.
If you have the coin, look for a Focal, Morel, Dynaudio, or even an Eton. At the start Diamond Audio used Eton drivers in their component sets, now who knows or cares who speakers they are putting their name on for the comp. sets. Have heard good reviews on Subs from them.MB Quart makes great products but they are not as "hardcore" durable as the others listed above.

I'd have to agree with bberman and say the MB Quarts. You could also look into the Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1's if the MB Quarts are too much ------------- Squirrel
