i have a sony (cdx-c5050x) in-dash single CD player and tuner. here's the situation, the CD (originals and CDRs) get sucked in, the laser shuttle motor runs and the disk spins in an initialization process it has always done, but then the CD doesn't get recognized. what sounds like the laser shuttle motor, just keeps running. toggling through tracks does nothing. i've tried a CD drive cleaner with no results. i've also given the area around the unit a few good "taps" with my palm to try to jar the motor, nothing. there was no intermittent failure of operation leading up to this.
any help would be appeciated, thanks, chris.

Sounds like it's toasted. The sound you hear is probably the CD motor spinning up to speed (and "tapping" it will only hurt, not help) so it is probably not "stuck." I'd bet the laser diode is gone. If the deck is under warranty, get it repaired -- or better yet get it replaced. And if you DO replace it, avoid Sony equipment. Sony may make good TVs for your home, but their car audio equipment is sub-par. Good luck!

I've installed a lot of Sony radios, with very few comebacks.
Some of them have a little reset button, behind the faceplate, that you can push in with a pen.....it never hurts to try that.
If that doesn't do it, you can get it repaired, but since new CD players are so cheap these days, it's hardly worth it.

Chris L, you rock !! there is a recessed button labeled "reset" behind the face plate. i pushed it with the tip of a pen and presto, the CD player is working. it did reset all my personal settings, but hey, that's the easy to redo, especially compared to buying a new unit of taking/sending to be repaired. thanks again! chris
