How can i unlock the radio it asks for a code once it powers up.

you should have a card in your glovebox with like ur owners manual and other info about your vehicle with the code on it.  if you cant find it, then take it to a honda dealer, i dont think they will charge you for it.  just make sure you remember the code.

what year is the carand is it an accord or civic?

I am not sure because i was given the radio but it says it was manufactured in Sept.98 and I think they told my it came from a civic

well, lets just say that you need the original car to get the codes or else the dealer will say its stolen, thus they will not give it to you.
they wont ask for the serial code on the radio, but they will ask for the license plate and VIN number and maybe the owner's name (they did for my case).
