6 Channel Speaker Wiring

A newbie here with a wiring question.I have a 4 channel OE system and want to add another pair of speakers in the dash.I have been told I can power those with my HU and then run a 4 channel amp for the other four.How is that accomplished when the HU has just the 4 speaker outputs?

What type of vehicle and what speakers are looking to put in? If you are going to add just the speakers and an aftermarket amp then you will need to get two LOC ( line output converters, they convert your speaker outputs from the deck to a rca out ). You will basically cut the speaker wires behind the deck wire the rear speaker outputs to one of the LOC's and for the front you will wire your new speakers and the other LOC.

Its an 03 Dodge Ram Quad Cab that came with 4 speakers in the doors but has a spot for another set in the dash. I was thinking of a simple up grade 6x9 in the front doors, 5.25 or 6.5 in the rear doors and 3.5 in the fronts. Possibly Kenwoods and a Pioneer 40W RMS 4 channel amp for its physical size.

Not sure if I understand that but it would make since to me if the LOC includes a wire diagram. My HU is stock and I didn't plan on running any RCA cables. Is there a LOC you recommend?

Depending on the amplifier you may or may not need the LOC. Some amps have a high level input (speaker level) and some only have a low level input (rca). Personally I try to stay away from recommendations, but the only one that I have personally is to stay away from the ones that you have to screw down the wire into place. The wires always come undone.

Right, The Pioneer I was looking at has the speaker level inputs needed but where I get lost is using the HU to power the dash speakers. The Pioneer is a 4 channel amp and would power the door speakers, I just don't understand how to split off the HU to power the dash speakers separate from the amp.

behind the radio is a wire harness as long as were not talking about an infinity system if it says infinity on the door panels than its different than this. cut the speaker leads behind the radio ... all 4 of them mount your "new" front speakers the 3.5 inch and run wire from them to your radio and hook them up straight to the deck where your old "front" speakers used to go.... the 6x9's ...... now you should have 8 wires going into the dash and 4 wires coming out of the radio ... run 4sets of speaker wire to your new amp ...connect all 4 sets to each "set" of wires that run down into your dash ... this is where it depends if your going to run rca's or not ............. if your not and you want to do speaker level than hook up 2 more sets of speaker wire behind the radio... the first set goes to the last set of wires coming out of your deck the second set gets connected to the wires you just ran to you 3.5" speakers these 2sets of speaker wires go back to the amp and connect to the "hi-level" in.  the other 4 sets go to the output side ... if you want to do rca's you just hook up the loc to the same connections instead of your 2 more sets of wire... and run rcas back and hook them to your low-level in.... wow ..... if you dont know what wires are speakers behind the radio just go to any local shop... Best Buy ..or anywhere and ask for a 2002 and up chyrsler harness and it will give you all of them

Maybe I am reading too much into it and its simply to run the front channel to the dash speakers and tie into that same front channel and run it to the amp.

Only thing is that it seems that the front channel would get a reduced input at the amp over the rear channel due to the dash speakers pulling the signal lower. I do have a fader control that would make up for some loss.

Is that the way its supposed to be wired for 6 channels?

I see, and you don't think the 3.5's will pull the signal down enough to cause trouble with the front door input vs the rear door inputs at the amp by having those wires connected together?

good question...................you could just use your rear output from the deck and  "piggyback" all 4 sets off those 2 channels then your fader would be front-3.5 rear 6x9 and 5.25
