Long story short, the head unit out of our 98 Accord was stolen. They cut the wires and so we had the harness re-wired in. We replaced the HU w/ an updated model, but now the steering wheel controls don't work. Someone on the forum explained that the steering wheel controls work as a  varied-resistance, one-wire system. When the shop re-wired it, they used butt connectors. That's about all I know. The info I've gotten from other Honda sites say that the HU should work w/ the SW controls. Is there a way that I can check the harness to make sure the connection is good on that pin? Do I need to solder the connection instead?

Looking for some help on this one. Thanks in advance!

If the head unit was replaced with a Honda OEM head unit designed for your car, the steering wheel controls should work.  Whoever installed it made a mistake and did not connect it properly, or they installed the wrong head unit.  Go back to the repair shop and demand that they correct their mistake.

It should have nothing to do with butt-splices VS solder, by the way.  It has to do with incorrect wiring.
