I currently have two RF 12" subs. They require at least a 1.25sq ft of air space each. With the current design of my system, I am down to only enough for .75 or less per sub. Will these subs be ok in a sealed enclosure, or do I need to look for new subs. I am wanting to stay with a pair of 12"s, but may not be able to. I plan on putting them behind the seat of my truck, but the amp rack and small cab area reduces the amount of space I have to work with. Any idea or suggestions? If you think I need to replace the subs, do I stay with 12s or go to 10s. I want a loud tight bass. I am more of a purest but still love to have the option to move some hair if needed. Thanks.

Nick, for most applications a sealed box is your best bet, it is also a pretty good bet that if you do put your current rf subs in this box, with the smaller airspace available to them, they will play a nice tight punchy bass but may exhibit some trouble with power handling and depth extension (overall spl and tonal quality). If you can mount the amp under the seat or above the box or somewhere else, do what you can to gain airspace. What kind of truck is this, a GMC but what model? My favorite size sub to use is a 10", it can play loud, is very "quick" (easy for an amp to control), with a proper box can absolutely amaze most people for output levels and sound quality. Before you go and buy new subs and a new box, use what you have and see how it sounds, then we can address issues that you do have instead of issues that you may have. Go down to an Audio Control dealer and ask for a demo on an Epicenter, this may be something for you to add to your system.

I have an 1984 GMC. Single cab. I am currently restoring it, and plan to show it when im done. I was planning on a sealed enclosure, it looks like I may have to put the amps under the seat. I have toyed with the idea of putting the seat on hinges so that it can be leaned forward and then once more to reveal the amp rack under the seat. It looks like I should stay with this idea, then I should have the room needed to give the subs just over 1 sq ft a piece. I am thinking this will still be okay, close enough to the 1.25. Hope so. I am familiar with the Epicenter. i am currently looking at the dual EQTs. Trying to decide if its worth it. Right now the system consists of:
Head Unit: Sony CDXC90
Amps: Fosgate 500m and a Fosgate 800x4
Subs: 2, 12" RF HE2
Mids: MB Quart - Two 6.5 mid bass drivers, and the three way MB Comps, 5.25, 4, and 1" tweeters. I have the Sony 210EQ, but think the Audio Control would be nice as well or in place of. I have had the 210 for a long time, may be time to chaneg it out. I have changed head units twice since I bought it. I have just upgraded my alternator and have a 1 farad smart cap I plan to put in. I will be gutting the interior to sound proof/damp it next week. I think ill just go with the original plan and modify my seat. Thanks for your advice.

Nick, more questions and free advice,
(1) what led you to change your head unit 2 times, are you a bell and whistle man or a sq man?
(2) a full size pu or s-15?
(3) A seat on hinges? I don't now about you, but I love my audio, my safety however is way more important, be carefull with this idea, if you pull it off safely in this vehicle, good for you, more people will ask you for advice on it.
Now for some opinion:
(1) Eq's are either band aids for problems that can be solved with the proper matching of equipment. My deck has no sub out so I'll add an eq and get it that way.
OR
(2) Eq's are used to solve a dedicated and identified problem. If you go through the judging lanes and they identify a huge midbass hump, you may need a 31 band 3rd octave eq to solve this problem
Not to knock Sony too hard (especially since you own this product), but before you go out and spend your hard earned $ on outboard eq's that you may not need (or do need because of an identified and dedicated problem), remove the Sony eq and cd player and open up other possibilities. I for one would recommend at a minimum the Eclipse Cd5423 or Eclipse Cd8443. It would be in your best interest to try this and see what using a sq cd player can do to the "flavour" of your system. Now everyone has their own opinions on cd players, but if you post up for some feedback on an Eclipse cd player, you will see the results. What you can expect if you do this is as follows:
(1) way improved sound quality, a drastic improvement
(2) a louder stereo that works the battery way less
(3) a volume contol that with proper setting of your gains on the amps, can be turned to full output, no distortion.
(4) Mb Quarts that sound like Mb Quarts
You have a good system and I'm sure we are all glad to see you doing all of these steps, take one more and consider what I'm suggesting. I'm not here to sell you product (unless you want), you are usually better off for that by going into your local specialty shop and getting the deal that you need. Hope to hear from u later

hey i have the 85 chevy s10 no matter what the size of your truck is you have the room, you just need to remove the jack and mount the amp under seat, or above the passenger foot space. when thats done you can get a little over 3cuft from what i remeber.
