The lights/bulbs that illuminate it may have burnt out. There should be a reset button behind the faceplate, try resetting it! Check the wiring and fuses. If you cant find nothing visually wrong or the reset button doesnt work, hope its still under warranty! I'm not sure if your head unit has this option but on my u can turn the display on and off. maybe you did that without knowing it!

I think Sony's quality varies from model to model.  I've heard good things about their old ES line, but generally average reviews of their other stuff.  My only experience with Sony head units was a very bad one.  I had the CDX-7580, the first in-dash CD player with a built-in 4-channel amplifier.  After a few months, it wouldn't eject a disc.  I sent it back to be fixed, and it was returned to me.  Shortly thereafter, the display began showing all these weird characters, kind of like the wristwatch the alien wore in "Predator" when he activated the self-destruct bomb.  I sent it back twice with no luck, and finally gave up on it and bought a Kenwood KDC-9000.
