Speaker direction

I have just installed a system in my 97 3000GT. I placed the two tens directly behind the rear seat pointing straight up towards the hatch glass. This boz is a custom box I created according to the speaker specs for volume. It is a sealed enclosure of .5 cubic feet (that is after speaker displacement).   

My question is this, would I get better or more sound out of them pointing forward into the rear seat or angled towards the rear. Because of circumstances and personal preference, the speakers cannot be mounted vertical pointed towards rear.

Also, if space allows, would ported be better alternative to sealed? And if so, which direction to point ports and speaker.

if the speaker is designed for a sealed box, don't port it. speakers are made for one type of the other of enclosure.
aiming subs toward the tail of the car sometimes helps, allowing room for resonation. Move the box around and see how it sounds better to you.
most hatchbacks like yours I see, have the subs firing upward, mounted toward the back of the trunk.

Actually if the speakers came with instructions on the build up of a ported box, you can get better bass. My suggestion from personal experience is a 5th order bandpass if you have the space. It is a big ass box, but if you want deeper harder hitting bass it's the way to go.

To port or not to port, that is the question...........depends on the speaker....if you can go for it....if you wanna get hard bass...go for the 4th, 5th or 6th order bandpasses....but be warned...they get huge!!!!!  other wise..stick with the sealed, and as glasswolf said...move them around, see what sounds good to you...

Now even if they didn't come with instructions on a ported box, you can build one....but ahve it professionally done, if you're not a pro......a lot of crap you gotta consider before doing somehting like that....summed up....if you don't ahve the experience builiding ported enclosures, and the speaker isn't for a ported enclosure...don't attempt it!!  Or if you do, seek professional help through the build-up..most installers will be glad to help you out....
