I am asking this for a friend and this is all of the info that I have from him.

1999.5 Nissan Pathfinder, Clarion cd player, 2 Rockford Fosgate punch Z 10's, 250 watt 2channel kicker amp on the subs, and factory Bose speakers.

The tweeters distort when there is a lot of resonating highs in an instrument (piano, strings, synthesizer, etc.). And only at a relatively high volume.

Any suggestions?

They may be on their way out. It may also be the crossovers for the tweeters aren't filtering enough of the bass and mids out. A higher crossover frequency may help. The tweeters are the most susceptible to distortion. If your amp is clipping (being driven past it's limits) your tweeters will usually show it first.

Those speakers are the first things you should've replaced. The bose speakers are unfortunately only good for about the first 4-5 years and then they are worthless (plenty of experiences). Also using them without the factory HU they never seem to sound as good.

Sure, buy low - sell high, don't eat yellow snow, friends don't let friends buy Sony... yur best bet in this case is to replace the speakers, then add a new amp to power them, take the Bose system out of the equation = much better sound quality.
