I drive a '97 golf, with the 8-speaker stock Infinity system. Does anyone know if there is an amp in this system? I'm installing an amp and sub and want to know if i'll have to deal with that when messing with the wiring harness. I know my parents grandcaravan with the Infinity system had an amp, but it was driving bigger speakers.

The easiest way to find out is to test the speaker leads behind the radio for continuity.  If you get roughly 4 ohms and you can pop them, you don't have an external amplifier.  You didn't mention whether or not you were installing an aftermarket radio, but if you do, be sure to get the antenna adapter- Metra part 40-VW10.

o and it's more then likely gonna have a Monsoon system in it as opposed to an Infinity system......I haven't worked with that system too much but I believe you can just hook up you're amp turn on to the amp turn on in the harness and be all set.....I forget off hand though

well, it has Infinity on all the speaker grills, so..........

After doing a bit of reading in the manuals, and searching various sites, I decided to just splice in a new wire to the power control coming off the amp. I'm also going to rung this wire through a switch in the dash, so I can turn the sub off if I want to carry on a conversation or something. luckily (?) my golf is about as standard as they come, so there's plenty of dash room for custom switches.

now i just have to figure out how to get all my wires where they gotta go. ugh.
