I am about to purchase a 2ohm mid bass driver and would like run it off of my MB Quart 3 way passive xover. Is this a wise thing to do or will it make a dramatic differnce?

Are you saying you currently have a set of 3-way MBQ components? If so, then it is not wise to add an additional speaker to the crossover network. They are designed for particular speakers, and for particular impedence loads. What kind of "2-ohm mid-bass driver" are you planning to install?

I agree, send Quart a e-mail and find out what particular driver goes with or is compatible with those crossovers. A 2 ohm driver will throw the crossover point out the window on the crossovers.

they are IDQ52's 5.25" 2ohm midbass drivers. They no longer make the speakers for the xover's i have. They are over 10 years old. But originally it was for a tweeter, 4"midrange, and a 6.5" woofer. The person i purchased them from wasn't using MB Quart speakers either. And right now the mid out and tweeter out i'm using a different brand and it sounds find. I just wasn't sure about if the ohmage differnce would do anything.

Connecting a 2-ohm speaker to a crossover network designed for a 4-ohm speaker will double the crossover frequency point for the lower impedence driver. For example, if the x-over is designed so the woofer to midrange transition is at 800 Hz, connecting a 2-ohm driver into the woofer section will double that X point to 1600 Hz. If there is a 4-ohm speaker used in the mid section, it will remain crossed at the lower frequency. So, between 800 and 1600 Hz you would have two speakers connected in parallel, a 2-ohm and a 4-ohm, for a net load on your amp in that frequency band of 1.33 ohms. This will do two potentially nasty things. First, it may overload your amp if it is not stable at a 1.33 ohm load, and second you will have a terrible response peak in the band from 800 to 1600, which will make your system sound like a telephone. (well, not that bad, but it will enhance the telephone-like sound of vocals and other midrange sounds.) In other words, I wouldn't do it. :)

I totally agree with Dyohn, he confrmed and put to words what I stated. I just sold a customer new 6.5" Quart drivers for a older set of 3 way components, so it can still be done. Find an authorized dealer who knows what they are talking about and wants to sell you what you need instead of what they have in stock or is available only on the net.
