2001 civic stereo removal/code problem?

hey,i had an fender bender in my 01 civic and when the body shop disconnected the batt i now need a code for th stereo to work. the dealer wants to charge an arm &leg to do this,they say the code is behind the stereo, is this true,if so how do i go about removing the stereo in this car???

yes that is true I believe it is under the serial number, to remove tthat radio you need to take the lower steering column panal off, then the glove box, and then depending on if you have a manual or automatic remove the pocket underneath the radio bezel. once you do that their are a couple of screws underneath, remove them and then take a trim removing tool and pull the bezel off the dash.

There is no need to remove steering column stuff or the glove box, just pop off the panel under the radio that has the acc. outlet.  It's just held on by a couple of clips,  Then you will need to look up under the radio to locate two 8mm headed screws, remove them and carfully pry out the whole radio/climate control bezel.  You'll have to take it apart to see the serial number on the bottom of the radio.  The only place to get the code is off Hondas Tech data base which is only accesable by the dealers. That number and some type of proof of ownership taken to your local dealer should get you the code at no charge.  Best bet is to bring the radio to the dealer out of the car, some serial numbers have a couple of posible codes so record them all.
