I believe JL makes an 8" woofer. Not to get sidetracked from the main topic here, but have you ever considered the Infinity Basslink? I believe those were designed with cars like yours in mind. just asking.

no wuestion, easily go with the 8" jlw7, its powerful and only requires around 250 watts. it will make the most of your 8 inch custom enclosure. ive heard it at my local shop, it sounds like a medium grade 12 inch or a really good 10 inch

Ok guys.. to answer some questions, and state a few more specs I'll need from the subwoofer:

I need the stereo for spring break, I'm taking the S to florida from buffalo ny w/ a friend and I want a better stereo than last years spring break (to OBX).. you cant really hear the stock one over 45 mph with the top down.. I bought a set of Focal polyglass components for upfront (only has 2 speakers) when my stereo is done I plan on having a soundstream reference 75x4 amplifier to power the front 2 speakers and the 8" subwoofer in the trunk..

Now.. the thing is.. by the time spring break comes (Leaving on the 13th of march) I won't have time to save up the money for a amp or headunit... Luckily, my exgirlfriend has a pioneer 7300 in her car that is my property, so I'm pretty much taking that out and putting it in the S for the time being, as for the amplifier, my friend is trying to get me to buy his unused 5.3x rockford fosgate amp ( https://www.rockfordfosgate.com/rftech/library/1997/3_Amplifiers/MAN1381A_5-3xAmp_MAN.pdf ) its a 5 channel, I could bridge the 4 channel to power the fronts and use the sub output for the sub.. I have my heart set on the soundstream.. but he told me I'm welcome to just 'borrow it' and if I like it I can buy it, if not oh well its sitting under a couch in the new box untouched anyways (atleast it got some use).. when I get back from florida I plan on picking up the soundstream amp and the pioneer dex-p9 headunit..

Cliff notes:

I need a working stereo (installed) by the 13th of march, by that time I will have a pioneer 7300 headunit, rockford 5.3x 5 channel amplifier, and focal polyglass components, all I need is the 8" subwoofer..

When I get back I'm ditching the 7300 for a DEX-P9, and the 5.3x rockford for a soundstream(75x4)..

do you get what I'm saying.. ? so those are my power constraints..

as for volume constraints.. the box is sealed and .38ft^3 worth of volume (w/out the speaker)

Now will the W7 work for me? I don't know the specs but I doubt I'll have the volume or power required to run such a speaker :(

also, I'd like to find everything on ebay :)

all you truly need for a single 8 inch jlw7 is 250 watts rms, i understand you need to keep it cheap and all but do you wunna have a cruddy subwoofer that you will want to replace by the begining of summer? if i were you i would wait for a w7 or a higher quality sub because even a medium grade single 8 inch wont produce a ton of bass. so maybe if you could borrow some money or something haha it may be worth it

The problem with the JL 8w7 is it has a mounting depth of like twice the normal 8", so since its enclosure is already built the 8w7 might be to big, not to mention it has a hefty price tag for an 8". If your looking for a good economic 8, go with the rockford, or event look at some of the audiobahns. The L7 would require modification of the mounting hole. Hope this helps since you've got a time crunch.

The JL W7 has a depth of 6.83". His enclosure should be at least 7 inchs deep anyway. Audiobahn is crap. If you want a less expensive but still good 8" look at JL's 8" W3v2. It wouldn't be as good as the W7 but still would be about as a 10" sub. It has a mounting depth of 4.31" but still has an x max of about 9.9 mm. Its reccomended enclosure volume is very close to what yours is also.

Here are a few good subs that should fit your space. The sealed enclosure specs for these fit in with your gross .38cuft .

I think that the 8w7 has a much larger recommended sealed volume than you have available.

the W7 likes about .875 cubic feet so your box wouldn't be right for it. Just go with the any of the above^

I just recently completed an exhausting search for a replacement 8.  I was running for 8's in my explorer.  Yes, I broke down and went for 10's instead.  But that was due to the following.  Manuf. have moved away from 8 inch subs due I guess to lack of demand.  I am pretty sure the JL w7 will be physically too deep to fit your needs.  I suspect any of the piston type subs will be.  Fosgate makes an 8 in the HX2 line.  As well as the new p series(piston style).  The HX2 is more likely to fit your space and give you a pretty impressive response.  Diamond, makes a DVC also that is fantastic on SQ.  Audiobahn makes a competition style 8 that although I have never heard it.  Sure looked impressive. And then of course you can find a 8 inch sub in all the basic lines (pioneer, sony, JBL, etc...)  I would go with the Fosgate for volume.  You mentioned road noise at 45mph.  This car may not lend itself to any type of true sound quality.  I have 3- Fosgate 4-ohm XLC's, they are of course used.  But since I have no plans for them I would get rid of them cheap.  Contact me if you are interested.  Good Luck.  Also JL makes an 8 in the W0 and W3 series.  Not quite so massive, and you can never go wrong with a JL sub.

The JL W3v2 is a better all around performer then the Rockford subs.

I didn't think about this one until later, also meets your specs, Image Dynamics ID8 V.3. They haven't updated the ID page to include the V.3 yet, but you can find the specs link on the tech page.

The only internet shop I found was:

https://www.woofersetc.com/product.asp?0=314&1=318&3=1476

I haven't ordered from thembut someone else may know how they are.

Since you are an EBayer, you've probably found these already:

https://cgi.ebay.com/dll?ViewItem&item=3079641765&category=18802
https://cgi.ebay.com/dll?ViewItem&item=3079735632&category=18802&sspagename=rvi:1:2

Since the 8 is not one of the more popular sizes you'll probaby not find alot floating around for sale.
