Ok I just recently bought a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer and I am installing an MTX 8100D amp to 2 MTX 8000 12" subs in a sealed box in the back. Before I realized that the amp requires a 0 gauge wire I installed a 4 gauge wire from my battery to the back of my SUV. I don’t really want to buy 17 feet of 0 gauge wire at 5 bucks a foot if I have already bought the 4 gauge wire. My question is could I move the battery from under the hood to back next to the amp, run the 17 feet of 4 gauge wire from my hood to the battery I have placed in the back and then 2 feet of 0 gauge wire from my battery to the amp. I figure this would save on wire and give the amp a little more power because it is right next to the battery. Or could I buy a new battery to put in the back and wire the 2 batteries together. I’m totally confused and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Leave the battery alone, it is fine where it is. I think the model you have is the 81000D? is this correct. If this is the case it is a 1000w rms @ 2 ohm mono sub amp. A 4 gauge line would probably work just fine for you. Make sure that you have a very good ground and proper fusing on the power line within 18" of the battery.

Ok i figured the 0 gauge was a little overboard. so what would you consider proper fusing? i have just the fuse that came with the install kit with the 4 gauge wire its only 1 fuse im not sure the amperage.

Yeah its the mono amp at 1000w. I figured the 0 gauge was a little overboard. so what would you consider proper fusing? i have just the fuse that came with the install kit with the 4 gauge wire its only 1 fuse im not sure the amperage. I also have a 1 farad 20VDC capasitor. i havent hooked anything up yet because i wanted to make sure everything was safe

What is the size of the fuse in the amp, if it not built into the amp then one should be installed as close to the amp as possible. It will be recommended in the manual. Was I correct on the model#? The size of the fuse (or resetable breaker) should be the same size or larger than the fuse for the amp. What size fuse and type of fuse came with the wiring kit? You might want to delete the other post you started as well.

Are you talking about the MTX Thunder 801D? You will only need 4 gauge like forbidden said. Look at this chart:Amplifier wire gauge chart

The MTX 801D has three 25 amp fuses installed with it. The in-line fuse should therefore be around 75 amps.

Its not the 801d that one is 400 watts rms x1 at 4 ohms and 800 watts rms x1 at 2 ohms This one is the 8100d and it is 500 watts rms x1 at 4 ohms and 1000 wats rms x1 at 2 ohms also i am running 2 mtx 8000 12" subs with an rms of 400 watts and a peak power handling of 800 watts. should i run them at 2 ohms and what is the best way to wire that. and what guage wire should i use to run the subs? is 12 guage worth the extra cash? Thanks for all the help

What is the exact model # of the subs, this will tell us if they are single or dual voice coil and their impedence. 12 gauge wire is fine for the subs. Again, what is the size of the fuse in your amp?

Sorry it took so long to get the amp size i didnt have the amp yet it was in the mail. i just got it and it has a 150 amp fuse. so do i need to put 150 amps worth of fuses near the batterey? the model # of the subs is 8124a ther are the 12" mtx 8000 series. the amp model number is 81000d i forgot the other zero. and ther are single voice coil subs. thanks again

You will need at least a 150 amp in-line fuse for this amp. I would reccomend running 2 gauge wire at least(or 0 gauge).
