I swapped stereos in my 97 Lumina, with another delco unit. After installing the new unit the speedometer doesn't work. if i plug the old one back in the speedo works fine.  Has anyone ever encountered this problem???

Some GM radios have speed compensated volume control built into the radio.

This is just a guess to your problem, but you may have plugged the connector with the speedometer signal wires into the new radio, and on the new radio those pins might be grounded out or otherwise connected to screw up the speedometer.

The only sections of the harness that need connected for the radio to function are the two 4-pin sections(which contain the speaker wires), and the 6-pin section with orange, yellow, black or BLACK/ white and a couple other wires in it(this is your power and ground).

Try unplugging any other sections of the connector and see what happens. Let me know what you find out.
