i thought i knew the answer to this question, but now i'm thinking twice about it.

when the power ratings (peak and rms) are provided for a pair of speakers, that rating is applied to each speaker, correct?  for example, if a pair of 6x9s is rated at 180 watts max power, 100 watts rms power, then each speaker is 180 max and 100 rms, right?

That's right. The power listing is for each speaker.
