is there a whole lot of difference in sound when the subs are facing the rear, rather then forward?

In general, SPL at lower frequencies can increase in the drivers seat with subs facing the rear.  Not always, but often.  It is different with every installation.

Depends on the vehicle, but in most cases it is usually better to fire them towards the rear of the vehicle.
