I have an Alpine CDA-9813 HU, and I am wondering if there is a way to connect an input device, such as a computer to it. I would like to install a windows computer in my car but don't want to loose the ability to fade, seeing as how a computer even with a nice sound card would only have one set of ouputs as far as i know. I'm wondering if alpine offers a way to input something, via RCA's or a mini jack to there decks. That way I could input the audio signal from my computer into the deck, then output the signal from my deck to amps. I could also use my decks sub level controls this way. I know my friends deck (one of the higher model kenwood's) allows him to connect his iPod through an auxilary input device he purchased for it, and it is not FM modulated.

You can use this adaptor from Alpine to get an auxillary input on your head-unit. It takes the cd changer input so you will need another adaptor from alpine if you want to keep your cd changer and have an auxiallary input also. yup, you can get an ai-net adaptor. All you do to switch the the source is as simple as pressing the source button. ie. same as changing from radio, to cd. 1 push of a button. Right now im running a farenheit dvd player in my truck, i have the audio fed through an rcd/ai-net adaptor so i can watch my movies while feeding them through my deck. you have all the adjustments and functions as you would with playing a cd or the radio.

Don't know if you realize this but no matter what you will loose the ability to fade. Even when you go to a cd you loose the ability to fade, they are only two channels (left and right).

I'm not sure I follow you. Why exactly would I not be able to fade to only the front speakers or only the back speakers. It's just an output level adjustment as far as I know. I'm just talking about the fade and balance features of every deck you know right?

Oh, do you mean because the input is only two channels, left and right? I am aware of this but my deck still has 3 sets of RCA preouts which will be going to a 4 channel amp and sub amp. The stereo input signal will be going out through two sets of RCA's. When I fade, it just turns one of those sets down.

I got to try this. I have an FM transmitter but would prefer wired than wireless. I don't understand why you lose the fader feature. Doesn't the HU take the two channels (L/R) and split them? Meaning Left to Left-front and left-rear, Right to right-front and right-rear?

Yes, if you hook up through an FM mod you will still beable to use the fader control on the deck as normal. The only downside to using the FM mod is that your signal quality isnt as good so your sound isnt as good as say a cd.

With FM, does the sound quality really degrade or does added signal noises get in the way of quality?
I have a nice FM transmitter that does quite a good job. I can't really tell the difference between playing a CD or high-bit-rated Mp3 in my Alpine unit than when I play my iPod through the transmtiter.
Does anyone knwo a good way to check this? (Without using just the ears as a guide)

with the ai-net adaptor, you will be able to fade, but it will only be 2 chanel stereo, instead of 4 channel in cd's. Like what your front speakers is putting out, will be the exact same in the back speakers. In cd's the back speakers are fill, and are for effects and such. You won't notice any difference at all anyways.

Are CDs not 2 channels? Only DVDs, that too the ones encoded with 4 channels or 5 or 6 channels can have "real" 4 to 6 channels where you can only use the 4 channels for the fader. If there are CDs with more than 2 channels encoded, I am not aware of it yet; can you inform me of some and where I can get them. I would really like to have them if they exist.
