Hello,

Newbie here.

Ok, wiring the amp power lead (4ga, 70rms x 4 Fosgate Power 551X – if that matters) directly to the batt. Manual says to place an in-line fuse as close as possible to the batt.

Well, I’d like to place the fuse just past the firewall (inside the car) to take it out of the "weather".

What is the significance of where you place the fuse, between the amp/batt.

Thanks.

if the wire shorts going through the firewall your vehicle will burn down..... is this what you were looking for???

I dont know about the laws there but here if a direct connection to the battery is not fused within 12 inches of the battery your vehicle is not insured and will not be covered if a fire start, which it probably will

essentially you want to place the fuse where it can actually protect the circuit and the vehicle,  which is right off the battery

You shouldnt have a problem with the weather, since the fuses that are designed to run amp, are covered in a plastic case with (usually) rubber gromets on the ends of the wire. The fuse will be fine, unless you drive with your hood up, or you have a rediculous hood scoop with no protection (like a bypass valve on a ram air system) to keep out the water when it rains.
