Help, I just spent the entire day replacing the old radio/cassette deck in my '89 Ford E-350 Deisel Van. I bought the conversion harness to simplify the wiring of the new Sony deck. I carefully made all the color-coded connections and the unit gets power but there's no sound! Not even a hiss out of the speakers. I had the stereo checked and it plays fine at the Best Buy shop. try switching the negatives on the front speakers, sometimes they are reversed in the full size fords

Your truck is probably common ground. You may need to rewire a couple of speakers.

If you look at the black speaker harness you will probably notice only five wires on the factory side. If that is the case you have a factory amp. If so, you have two options, run new speaker leads which is what I would do or, integrate the factory amp with one of our special wiring harness' designed just for those vehicles. Metra part# 70-1768.

Metra Tech, your input here is invaluable. Thank you for participating. Yes, that truck usually uses factory amps. The best bet is to run new speaker wire. Time consuming, but worth it, especially since the sound quality on the amps is one step above crap.

Just adding my 2 cents of advice. If you arent getting even a hiss, there are 2 main things to check for.
1. are you getting power to the deck? (Does the unit light up when powered on) If no then there's your problem. Get power to the deck.
2. If there is power to the deck, the speaker wires arent going to the speakers. Each speaker only as 2 wires, not necessarily one of them going to ground. So make sure both the wires are indeed going from deck to speaker. Test 1 speaker at a time. If you have one of those tools that phone/network guys have (a cable tester) or know a buddy who has one, you can connect one end (the pulse generator) to the speaker end, then test which is the wire at the other end with the probe. Get the cables straight and you should be in business. Let us know your progress.

Thanks for the suggestions folks. I tried every possible speaker wire connection combination, but still no sound. I think Metra Tech diagnosed the problem. I did notice only five wires connected to the speaker harness on the factory side. Since trying to rewire the four speakers will be a major pain (the van interior was customized by the previous owner), it looks like I need to get Metra Tech's special wiring harness.
