what would sound better in a 2003 dodge ram quad cab?

A down firing sub box or a upfiring sub box?

The box goes under the rear seats.

well thats just personal preference to me. just experiment..i would guess an upfiring sub box. but have the side of the box plexiglass so you can see in! that'll look cool. :)

I would say up since its under your seat, it will pound on everything.  It should sound really good up but im not sure.  You should try both options and choose what u like

Up-firing and down-firing both sound about the same.  Be sure you purchase a woofer that is designed for this sort of mounting, as not all can be used this way!

in my experience, i have had my best results downfireing in fords and chevs with those low seats in the back.  When i fired them up it seemed that the seats absorbed the bass to much.

Up or down, the enclosure doesn't matter.  Just get the right kind of sub to install into it.  This link will explain how to determine if your woofer is suitable for down-firing applications:

https://www.partsexpress.com/resources/downfire.html

Up-firing is actually harder on woofers.  The best bet here is get one that passes the down-firing test, and power it with at least 20% LESS than it's max RMS capability in a sealed enclosure.

The BEST bet is to mount a woofer facing forward, in neither an up nor down-firing configuration.
