Ok folks, heres my question, how close is to close to position the passive x-overs on my Infinity Kappa 635i's. I have the kappas mounted in the stock locations in my 88 chevy van, but they are like 10" off the floor behind the second pair of seats facing each other, so I'm thinking I'm not getting full potential out of them. I built 2 boxes so I could mount them on the partial wall behind the bench seat , bettween the cargo area up high facing forward. While building the boxes I just figured speaker depth without  even thinking about the x-overs. I think I could velcro the x-overs inside the box but they will be very near the speakers mag without much room to spare, will this harm either the speaker or the x-over. I could rebuild the boxes and make them taller without much struggle, but I would rather not as I don't want to give up more space but, I will if you people advise me to do so.  Thanks an awful lot.    CC

In general, mounting your crossovers on the back of the speaker magnet is not the best idea.  There are several reasons for this.  One, the masgnetic flux from the magnet can affect the Xover points in the coils (the low pass sections.)  Two, in a high-power setup the heat generated by the magnet assembly can cook the X-over, in some cases melting the plastic.  Three, if you are mounting your components in a sealed enclosure that was built for the mid-woofer, the Xover will change the enclosure characteristics and make the effective size much smaller, which will limit your bass response.  The better way to go, in my opinion, is to mouint the Xover OUTSIDE the enclosure.

DYohn, Thanks alot very good points, well taken. I never thought about the heat, and the mags effect on the inductors withen the X-overs. I shall heed your advice. thanks.     CC
