I own a 2000 chevy silverado ext cab. I  have installed a sony cdx-c780 head unit,(4volt pre out) as well as a kicker ix402 amp. Which I am running bridged. I have ran 8 gauge wire directly from the battery to the amp. and grounded it to the chassis. Now my lights are dimming. I have already turned the amp gain below half to try to resolve it, however the lights still dim and my voltage gauge on the dash moves as well when the bass hits. Something I remember was when I turned up the factory deck, I could see the display dim as well. I have not yet ran a direct wire from the battery to the head unit.( which I will do, very soon!) If this doesn't solve the problem does anyone have the same vehicle or problem and they have resolved like this problem?

Thank You!

PETER

It sounds like you need a cap or a new battery. Does the car have any trouble starting? Like a dying battery might cause? If not you probably just need a capacitor. Those are my thoughts anyway

dimming lights, big problem anwsered many times on the site. trying searching past posts.  A cap is considered like a band aid in this situation. it will solve the problem but will make it worse later on. if your battery is going bad that should be replaced no matter if it solves your problem or not. its just a must for proper up keep of your truck. now if your battery is not going bad, you should seriously consider upgrading your alternator. stock will usually not handle the charging needs of an after market sound system.

A 2000 silverado alternator should be able to handle at least an 800 watts RMS amp. When your lights dim do you have other accessories running like the air conditionor or heater? Is the dimming bad? Have your alternator and battery checked by a mechanic.

Trust me any system no matter where will probably dim the lights, get a cap or battery that pushes out power fast cuz thats what amps need is power quick

Have you upgraded the ground wires?

Yes I have  upgraded the ground wire.....I tried a cap. 1 farad and it helped a tad.... not enough worth buying one..I am thinking about a new battery..dry cell, deep cycle..ANY ideas on a good one?. Then having the alt boosted up to 145amp from the stock 105amp.... That will cost around $200 canadian... So I am a little concerned about making any of these choices so any info and input on  this would be a big help to me...And thank you for the input so far....

THANK YOU

Peter

The ONLY good solution to power problems is a HIGH OUTPUT ALTERNATOR.  Caps are a waste of money.  Deep cycle and multiple batteries will help if you run the system with the car off.  For use with the engine running, an alternator is the only thing that will help.

If your stock alt is 105 amps, that is your problem.  Upgrade it.  Don't forget to upgrade your battery cables at the same time (positive AND ground.)  The battery cables must be rated to the alternator output.
