Are there any vehicles that you regularly have to modify the dash for a routine cd-player install?
I was installing in a '97 Skylark coupe. Tried like hell to get the CD player in w/out modifying the dash. But without a spacer, i couldn't get the CD Player to lock in the cage....with a spacer, i couldn't get the dash back on in a way i could put the beauty ring back on.
I was using the American International kit GMK420.
My partner ended up just punching out the white back piece behind the radio opening. I dunno. Seems like that shouldn't be necessary, but it got the necessary clearance. But seems to me like the kit should've allowed enough clearance without having to modify the dash in that manner.
He says he's had to do that to a couple other GM models in order to get the CD player to fit. Is that common practice? Anybody else do that? Is there a list of GM models for which this is required?
I've seen some vehicles that have really short dins, but most CD players would still fit. The only problem I've had with having to make space behind a CD player was with this jensen that a friend of mine got that was Looong, I did the install and had to remove the back piece for it to fit. This was in both a 96' Buick LaSabre custom and a 95' Pontiac Grand Prix. I installed it in my dodge stratus with no problems so I think it all depends on how deep the manufature made their din and not so much on the actual install kit.

yeah, but is it necessary at times to break/cut shiit from behind the dash to get the needed clearance for the standard 2" by 7" x ?" DIN sized Head Unit into dash?
I have a 1996 Buick Regal and the cd player just almost cd player however the wires made the headunit pop out a little so i broke the back piece off and now it fits just fine. There is no harm to this other then you are missing a piece that nobody ever sees and you will still be able to put the old factory cd player back in when you decide to sell your car.
