alright, well i went up to the store for audio stuff around here.....(audio zone)....they said that my eclipse speakers were no good now and nuthing could be done cept send back to factory. well i figure why not go for a newer better system....the 9500 MTX. i will be gettin2 of these on a 1501D (supposedly maxing them out at a safe limit) he quoted me the install (wires, ??gauges??..dont know what for...and all the other things) for 2500....seems a little steep to me. he said 500 a sub and whatever the amp would be.....so i would think at MAX 2 grand? am i correct and try to bargain him?

You blew Eclipse's? Which ones and how'd you blow them? $2500 for new gear and a full install (with new enclosures?) sounds about right to me. ------------- Support the12volt.com

ne enclosure, meaning just the box no fiberglass......it was the eclipse 8712DVC's...2 of them on a kicker 400/2 supposedly the surround is known to peel away from the cone.

but honestly right now im running that amp to the one good sub, and it hits as hard if not harder than the original 2 12's i dont trust nobody with installs no more, im gunna get my friend to fiberglass a whole setup for me and everything for like 400 bucks....for the two mtx 12's and the install is free from the place, he said just for wires battery subs box amp and tax and whatever else is needed its 2500....seemed pretty steep imo

Let's see here, you blew subs (not the subs fault btw) and now it's time for an upgrade. I sold those 8700 series subs and never had one surround come apart from the cone. This to me sounds like clipping or cone overexcursion due to excessive gain. I would get some more info before I made a choice. Does Audio Zone sell Eclipse or not? and what kind of info did they give you on why this happened? ------------- Top Secret, I can tell you but then my wife will kill me.

no the dealer that sold them got bought out by ultimate audio (the place WAS called audio country) so i went there and they said "no we dont carry them anymore" so i go to audiozone and they say "theres no way to fix it and its common on the eclipse line". over excusion isnt the case as it wasnt even at RMS for the subs. so that cant be it. and if i offended u cuz u owned an eclipse...wooops....i need info on them image dynamics, the subs dont look special but they say the quality is far superior to any thing out there. sq and spl just sq or what

Just because you are nowhere near the rms of the sub does not mean that over excursion cannot be the problem. Back up the bus a minute, yes I am a Eclipse dealer so I got my panties in a knot, but still I'm here to help you solve a problem. Back to the problem now. It is not a common problem at all, unless you are clipping all over the map, this means an uncontrolled motion of the driver (overexcursion). If your amp is too small or has the gain set improperly and the output clips, any speaker will get damaged, in this case the Eclipse voice coils held up fine by the sounds of it which is usually the weakest link. So it went to the next weakest link, in this case the glue that hold the cone to the surround. Make no misake about it, if the cone is separating from the surround, it is either a desgin flaw that would be apparent throughout the entire production run, thus I would have had the same problem, or the sub was being asked to do something it was not designed to do. My bet is on the latter. This is suspect because of the amp that you are using is way too small for those subs to operate anywhere near their full potential. If the amp is too small and you want more bass, this usually leads to improper gain setting and all of the associated problems with subs that come from clipping. No sub is immune to this. Do not blame the sub, it was only doing what it was asked to do, blame the improper matching of equipment unfortunately.

Two points. 1) Eclipse has never been known for mechanical failures, and their build quality is top of the line. No way did those surrounds fail because of bad speakers. Rob is right on the money. 2) If surrounds have seperated and you intend to toss those drivers because of it, I'll give you $20 for what you think is trash right now. Repairing surrounds is the easiest thing to do in the loudspeaker world. The cost for repairing those should run no more than $40 each. The shop who told you they are toast just wants to sell you new speakers. If you caused the surrounds to seperate from the cone on a pair of 8712's with a Kicker 400.2, then it must have been clipping like a drunk barber. ------------- Support the12volt.com

so can someone look at the specs of that amp and those speakers and tell me what settings to run on it. and how would i go about fixing the surround? what kind of place would be able to fix this? can i buy a flexible silicone glue and do it myself? or should i pay someone?

OK, first of all do you know how to match the input gain on an amplifier to the output from your head unit? Silicone glue is not the answer, although if the surround has simply lifted and is not damaged, you COULD try superglue if you are very careful and patient. Repairing surrounds is best done by a speaker repair shop. Where do you live? ------------- Support the12volt.com

Amazing what can be found on the web, eh? :0 That shop looks like a good place since they work on high-end loudspeakers and they've been around a while. They don't list Eclipse as one of their serviced brands, but go there and show them what you have and I bet they can either help you or direct you to a place that can do the job. Good luck! ------------- Support the12volt.com

I bet they'd do it for you (assuming there is no other damage) for one hour shop charge or less. You might also ask them to test the voice coils and make sure the speakers are OK. get your speakers repaired and then let's tackle why this happened in the first place. ------------- Support the12volt.com

How long have you had your Eclipse?? They have a 3yr. warranty you know!! They are right!! That shop just wanted your money. As long as you sent in your warranty card to Eclipse you can return it yourself, and get it fixed or replaced. Granted this would be time consuming, but it wouldn't cost you much. Not to mention, if the voice coils are gone, they will replace it. ------------- Rhino - Bringing you only the best in car audio!!
