I am going to be mounting my new 6.5" speakers and I am planning to dynamat behind and around the speaker mounting location.  I have seen a few pictures by people who have mounted the driver so that it sandwitches the sound deadening material  between the speaker basket and the car sheet metal.  This seems like a bad idea.  I would think it is best to mount the speaker basket to the car sheet metal.  Any comments?

In my experience it doesn't really matter one way or the other.  I've used Dynamat (or, more accurately, Brown Bread) as a speaker mounting gasket.

I'm also interested in the best way to mount new 6.5s to the door location.

I was thinking of using a foam baffle for the actual speaker and maybe some mat on the rest of the door but haven't decided.  I don't know a lot about the subject, but things I've read say not to mount the speaker to the car sheet metal because the metal is curved and will not create any sort of seal.  Additionally, with no damping material between the speaker and the metal I'd think you'd get some strange vibration noise.

This guy knows what he's doing and went w/ damping material between the speaker and the door:
