i recently had a new HU, front speakers, and subs put into my car (within the last two months) and the car bit the dust so i am buying (in the works) an xterra. i want to take everything out of my old car and put it in the new one. everything was professionally installed so am i screwed here regarding transfering equipment? i may be trading in the old one for the new one so something has to happen relatively quickly. i'm sure this has happened to someone in the past (forbidden or Dyohn-how do most dealers handle this?) thanks everyone -Jay

If your trade-in deal was made with the stereo in the car, it is possible its value was included in the offer. Usually though, a trade-in offer is based only on the make/model/year/general condition of the car. I'd pull the system out and return the car to factory before I let them have the car. If they say "Hey, wait a minute, there was a (insert brand name here) in the dash before!" Then ask them what the trade-in difference is and see if it's worth it to you to go ahead with the deal. If they don't say anything, then they don't care. ------------- Support the12volt.com

they have not seen my other car yet so they assume its all factory...i'm bringing it there today and won't be able to pull everything out before hand. i'll make sure they realize everything is coming out. will the car audio dealer cut me some slack about reinstallation?

Good plan. It's always best to be honest and upfront, even if car dealers sometimes are not. If you want the system installed into a new vehicle, I suggest you call a couple of shops in your area and ask them for a quote. You should be charged the shop's hourly rate plus there will be charges for a new wiring harness adapter for the new vehicle and maybe some new wiring. ------------- Support the12volt.com

I know that my shop will actually pull all the old stuff out for free if we were the ones that put them in to start with. i've dealt with the same shop in my area a few times so hopefully they will play ball with me a little bit, i don't have a problem with paying for re-install (or maybe try it for myself for the first time) i just need help uninstalling my amp and HU. (i could just unplug everything myself and leave the wires but i'm not sure if that would be the way to go) Also, i had $150 JL co-ax's put in up front and i don't have the factory speakers to put back in...the shop might have some crap ones laying around to put in? (i hope to put them 6.5" in the xterra which i believe should fit.

Sorry for the delay, you know west coast thing, I'm still snoozin when most of you are having lunch. If we did your install and you are trading vehicles, we will remove your equipment at no extra charge, provided we are doing the install on the new vehicle. It is never in your best interest to leave your old audio gear in the vehicle for the next user to enjoy unless they are giving you a damn awesome trade and you infact either need or want new gear for the new vehicle. If you have to put garbage back into the trade in vehicle, so be it, they are buying the vehicle, not a concert hall on wheels. ------------- Top Secret, I can tell you but then my wife will kill me.

every shop has a pile of factory speakers, chopped factory deck plugs, and leftover dash screws that they will not admit to collecting.......  -------------

i went to my local shop and they said they would charge approximately $120 for uninstall and then roughly $240 for re-install...(seems obvious to me they charge 60 an hour and expect two hours for uninstall and four hours to reinstall) so i'm disappointed they are not cutting me any slack even though my install was done less than a month ago. i guess i have no choice but to try and do it myself since i refuse to pay them for both. any suggestions?

That sucks if it is the same shop who sold yu the gear in the first place. But, everyone's gotta make a living I guess. See if you can bargain them down a bit to somethng like a $250 flat fee for remove and install.. ------------- Support the12volt.com
