It depends on what you want and what kind of music you listen to.  If it was ME, I'd spend the money on a really nice head unit and front component set first, and worry about subs, etc. later after I saved up more money.  But that's just me.

LOL!

$700 max is pretty much low end, but here's one suggestion.  Get a Blaupunkt Phoenix head, a 10" Dayton sub kit from Parts Express, a Lightning Audio mono sub amp, and Infinity Reference coaxials for the doors (get the size that fits.)  Should have enough left for distribution blocks and amplifier install kit and misc. odds and ends.  You won't make much of an install fee on this, though

y not keep factory headunit... save 100-200 there buy wiring kit with that money... get u a "good" cheap amp.... yet again i refer back to the jbl 600.1 and then possibly 2 CVR12s and build your own box which is about....30-40$$ max...so....

amp... jbl 600.1 $240.00 shipped

subs... 2 CVR 10s 170-180shipped...

wiring kit... about... 50-60$$

box.... 50$ max....if custom... prebuilt a good 120 id say max

all of that thinking highest cost would be 580..... but i had the same setup and found a box for 80$$ shipped for both 12s its got some good bass... now the question is are u buying online or in town?? b/c these prices are online... and with self install....

best thing to do is find a site where its cheaper.. i used etroincs.com or discountave.net then do a 105% price match.. even if it doesnt fully go through they still give u a little bit lower price....then u still have room to get say 2 12s or so.... only thing is i dontk now where 2 find a line out converter for th amp...

This will get you pretty close to $700 with shipping but you will still have to get a box made.  Like flatulatta said you can get a box for pretty cheap or fabricate one yourself.  The dollar amount limits you but if your friend already have speakers in the front they can power them with the radio for now and upgrade the front end with an amp and a two pairs of good speakers later on.

yea... i know how working on a budget is my1st stereo was about 500$$$ and i had 2 12s and a 600w amp but i also had a bundle of speaker wire and a bunch of rcas lying around so my kit cost me 40$$ but even still...i wasnt really worrying about the front speaekrs b/c that wasnt specified....but go with 2 CVRXX and the jbl ull be pleasantly pleased...id suggest getting the jbl 1200.1 with that setup b/c that amp barely moved those subs....

Remember, all things are negoitable. What I mean by that is when doing business, especially with an internet retailer like www.ikesound.com you can haggle for a better price, especially if they know that you're willing to buy more from them. For instance, if you go to ikesound, which I would highly recommend, then go there willing to buy your Head Unit and Speakers at minimum. Discuss price and then if you find an amp as well, then throw that in and see what happens. Now, don't be a jerk and try to get something for free, but negoitating a price from $200.00 to $175.00 is very reasonable. Make sure that you include the cost of shipping and handling as well, otherwise you'll get burned there. I for one was on a budget and bought my Head Unit, Pioneer Premeir DEH-P550MP and a pair of JBL GTO635's all for, and including shipping, $250.00. Do some research and check prices all over the internet that way you can be assured that you're getting the very best price.

Head Unit, Amplifier, Speakers and then Sub would be my recommendation for the order of importance. You've got to have a solid brain for your system to run and no matter how good the speakers are they'll sound like crap if you have distorted power going into them. I would recommend the Pioneer Premeir DEH-P550MP if you can find one and go with US Acoutics because they give you the best bang for the buck and are very affrodable with solid sound. MB Quart would be my choice of speakers and you can find some very good deals on e-bay if you look carefully and are patient. Be wary of the sellers as you can get took if you don't do your research on them. Make your sub your last purchase as the lack of one will not keep you from acheiving good SQ.

Hope this helpS!

Razorbacx

I agree, what good are subs if there is no music to go with them?

But....having installed before, I know that some people have NO EAR FOR SOUND AT ALL!!!

So, if you're friend wants a factory HU (some actually sound ok) and a couple of subs with cheap crappy full range speakers running off of HU power..go for it.....it will sound like crap, but don't listen to me, I don't know what I'm talking about.

On a serious note: start with the HU, you will be glad you did. You can probably get some bass response from the speakers you already have if you amp them and set the crossovers properly. Then get subs, but $700 is plenty if you spend it wisely. You can go to a big box store with that and walk out woth pretty much nothing.

framedragger, is this all of the money that your friend is looking to spend on an entire system.  If that's all that he wants to spend he can get a very nice sounding system that can turn heads adn still sound good.  I have heard and watched some of the cheapest systems around sound good and even win competitions.
