im trying to help out a friend with a jvc kd-929 hu installed in a marine set up running 4 speakers with the internal amp.im wondering if this hu has overload protection because when we get to half volume it shuts off for a second then comes right back on.i checked the wiring and even ran a bigger gauge power and ground to no avail. when we fade to just the front speakers we can get a little more volume.can someone please help?

I think your hunch is probably right.  Since you can get more volume / turn it up higher when you fade to the front, I'm guessing that you're pushing the hu too hard and that it does have some sort of overload protection built in.

It sounds to me like its time to add a 4-channel amp if louder music is important to you.  What kind of speakers are you running?

Are you getting a ton of distortion before your HU shuts off.

Check to see if the apaprent volume increases as you fade towards the front OR towards the rear.  This would indicate the two sets are wired out of phase from one another.  As far as the HU shutting down at half volume, it sounds like the amps are shuting off because they are being over-driven, as this is not a normal behavior.  Is the speaker load no less than 4 ohms per channel?  Check to make sure you don't have a stray wire strand or something shorting out a speaker or shorting to ground.

keep in mind too that in an open air environment things dont "sound" as loud as they really are... in a car you have a sealed environment... it may be that at the same volume level in a car that system would be rockin' hence its probably distorting and shutting itself down to prevent an implosion....  you sealed the speakers too right?  they are not running infinite baffle? which of course kills the efficiency and makes the deck work a lot, lot harder.....
