amp vs seperate crossover?

I'm not sure why it took me this long to think of this question but here goes.

My infinity speakers came with thier own crossovers. I'm guessing they would eliminate the need for me to bother setting the crossovers on the amp?

The crossover on those infinitys just divide the frequencys and send them to the tweeter and woofer. They dont act as a high pass filter. If you have sub(s) or if these are really small speakers and you have them amped you could try playing around with the high pass crossover on your amp going to the speakers.

I would cross them over even higher than that, say 120-200 hz area. This usually leads to a little more output before the onset of clipping as compared to a little less output and a bit more midbass. It is a personal preference though, turn the subs off entirely and adjust the crossover and play with the gain control and see how you will have to adjust it up or down depending on where the onset of clipping is. Remember though, once you think you have it right and you have your subs plugged in, the output of the subs will mask any distortion coming out of the smaller speakers (in most cases). A normal 12db octave slope found in most amps will yield some great results and still leave you some midbass as well.
