What should one be concerned about when using a deep cylce battery for a starting battery in a light truck application?

nothing... it's just a battery. "deep cycling" a battery means a deeper discharge, and then recharging it. deep cycling is hard on lead acid batteries, but a battery designed for the purpose will usually have fewer, but thicker plates, so they will not warp with the heat built up from recharging from a deep discharge. fewer plates often (but not always) means lower CCA's, but longer reserve time. these points raise the question, why are you wanting to use a deep-cycle for starting? it will do nothing bad, but it will usually cost you more than replacing your stock battery with an identical one. The only reason i can see to use such a battery, would be if you are going to be camping, or EXPECT to drain the battery repeatedly.

I run lots of accessories in a full size van and I expect to drain it lots when I go camping. I was under the impresion that its ok as long as you go up a battery size in cranking amps due to the reasons you metioned.

then yes, go with a deep cycle battery. it will last much longer in the severe treatment category, like you are going to be putting it through. as long as you have enough CCAA's to start the truck, then you should be ok... if you are going to be in freezing climates, you have to be

I have to be...................? Carefull in the cold, I assume you meant to write. My original Battery for the truck came 650 CCA. I'm thinking 800 or 900 CCA should be plenty and like you said, I'll have to keep an eye on it in the winter months or maybe switch back to a starter battery. Thanks For the Help!
