what gauge speaker wire should i run on a infinity 12" dvc capable of 1400 max? my amp is only 1000 watts max. the wire will only be running a few feet.

the max ratings are not important for this. Just curious, what amp do you have? those subs have a 350watt RMS value. as far as wire size, i would use 12 guage.

My boss told me once that anything over 16 awg is overkill for speaker wires.  My boss is the CEO of Adire Audio. posted_image  This inquiry was about getting ready for a competition with a 1200 watt (rms) amplifier.  We were out of 16 awg, so I ran 18 awg.  It most definitely didn't effect my score.

12awg or 16awg or 18awg will all work well, but there is nothing wrong with overkill so run some 8awg. lol

some have unnessesary money laying around.... 99% of amps dont put out enough current to even use 18g.

And there's the issue.  But it isn't due to poor quality or anything.  Remember that power is current times voltage.  The output voltage is pretty high on amplifiers, so current is low.  This means that for a given power output, you can run smaller wire.  The power wire to the amp is limited to 14.4 volts, so current must increase to supply more power.  That is why it is important for it to be so large compared to the speaker wire.

Oh, and I completely agree about the overkill comment made above.  You don't need anything over 16 awg, but it sure does look cool to have large wire going to your sub.  So from a cosmetic perspective, it does make sense to go large.  But just as long as you know that it doesn't help your performance.
