I have a 98 grand prix gtp, im installing an after market stereo. my grand prix came with and external amplifier for the rear speakers (i have located it). Well there obviously has to be a remote wire going to this amp to give it a signal to tell it to turn off and on. I need to find which one it is so i can splice and run a wire to my amplifier for the subs, there is a harness that connects to it with about 15 or so wires. I don't know which one to splice in to. someone please help.

I am only doing my install this way because atm i can't afford the head unit i want, so instead of using the one i have and going through the hassal of installing it, i'll just wait.

The only way to do it is to tap into the wire harness that goes to the head unit. The wire you want to tap into is the yellow 12 volt switch wire. Here is a diagram of the harness that connects to your head unit. https://www.the12volt.com/installbay/detail.asp?info=alarm&year=2000&make=Pontiac&model=Grand%20Prix&ID=18796&type=Stereo

thanks, i had a diagram, just figured there would be a remote wire that went to the stock amp. Will that allow the amplifier(subs) to turn on and off with the radio?

Why not simply test each wire at the amp until you find the correct one?

I have tried that several times. Each time I have come up empty handed. I think it is more than just one wire that turns the amp on and off. But if anyone out there has found the remote wire please let me know.

I ended up using the 12v switched. I ran into 1 one problem along the way. The ampilfier does not always turn on with the stereo and I think somewhere along the line something maybe be shorted because no audio even comes from the high's which is powered by the head unit. I haven't figured this out and I work at a car audio installation place and no one there has any idea why this is happening because this is the wire that you are supposed to use. I ended up having to hook up a toggle switch to the remote for the amplifier and mounted it under the driver's side of the dash. When I turn the radio on and nothing plays I simply flip the switch off then back on and everything is fine.

What wire did you tap into? You should not have problems like that.  I will check my notes and see what wire I used when I ran that setup and get back to you.

There are 2 yellow wires on the harness, make sure you tap into the right one. One Yellow wire is +12 swtched the other is a speaker wire, they both might show voltage with the test light, the one +12 swithed is the one that comes on the same plug as the +12 constant. Double check your wires and let me know what happened.
