98 chevy p/u amp ?

 can i hook an amp and subwoofers up to the factory deck? i have the deck with the seperate cd player below the main unit. if that is possible how do you hook up to the factory unit? the truck is 1998 k-1500 silverado. thanks Brian 

The simplest way is to use a line-output converter connected to a set of speakers in your truck.  This will give you an RCA signal to send to your sub amp.  There are several on the market, like THIS, for example.

You can use a high-quality line output converter (LOC).  Connect it according to its instructions to the left and right original speaker wires for input to the amp.  In lieu of output RCA's which are not present on the factory head.

you'll also need to run a relay wire from your stock hu to your amp. this wire will be the yellow wire going into your radio. tap into it and run the wire back to your amp. be sure to run the power and relay wires on the opposite sides of the cab so you dont get engine noise.

Just a warning, a high-quality line output converter (LOC) can be a real complicated thing to wire. if you are not familiar with wiring and are new to this, i would just get a real cheap HU with rca outputs. You could have a professional install it, but it will cost almost as much as getting a cheap, 60 buck HU. The stock HU also wont accomedate for the subs. You cannot adjust the subs seperatly from the speakers, therefore the speaker's bass level will be higher, creating distortion. if you get a nicier HU with a sub preout control, taht would help you greatly. Just somthing to think about.

Dont you just hook the L and R speakers up to it and run it that way? Shouldnt be too difficult evn if your not big on doing electrical stuff. Follow the directions and come here if you need help. You should be fine. That would be a heck of a lot cheaper then getting a new HU (head unit). Also dont some newer stock decks have RCA outputs on them? I would double check on that just to make sure first before buying anything.

Actually guys, this is pretty darn simple. Buy a decent LOC and tap into the speaker leads. Run the rca cable to the amp. Connect the remote on wire from the amp to the pink ignition wire coming down the steering column, or to the yellow wire in the harness going to the factory amp module. (this wire is the ignition lead for the amp)(the pink wire in the steering column is also the ignition line, it tests +12v with the keys in and turned to on).

Buy yourself an amp that has the option of a remote sub level control. This control is actually a small box that mounts on the dash of your vehicle and is connected with the supplied wire. It is sometimes included but more often than not is a separate option. Have a look at the Concept CA275M + RM100 to get an idea. There are many systems out there that have this capability. Do not confuse sub level control with a bass boost circuit like punch bass. I believe the Lightning Audio Strike series amps come with the supplied level control.
