Hi, I just had a quick question that will probably sound dumb to some of you seasoned veterans. I've got 2 rockford fosgate punch HX2 12's and they are in a sealed box with 1.25 cu ft. per chamber and I am pushing them with a power acoustik amp which I'm running at 370 X 2 RMS, and each sub is 500 RMS. When I turn the volume up (not even very much) it sounds OK but I keep hearing a wierd popping sound during strong or sudden bass notes and it is really getting quite annoying. I wouldn't think that they are being over powered because it does it with nowhere near 500 watts. Please help.

Where is the gain on the amp set at and does the amp have a bass boost control?

i had that problem once when my box was too small. but if youve got 1.25cuft, thats not the problem. wheres your gains at? if they are up too high it will do that as well. actually thats where id put my money. probably clipping your subs. try turning it down a 1/2 of a turn or so and see what happens.

The crossover is set at 80htz and the amp doesn't have a gain setting on it.

And yes the amp does have a bass boost control but when it is off, it can barely make the subs move.

Give your head a shake and go back and look at the amp, yes it will have a gain control, it may not say gain but may say something different. Post the exact model # of your subs and amp.

The subs are the fosgate RFD2112's and the amp is the power acoustik gothic series OV2-1600, and by gain would that be the "level" knob?

Yes that is the gain control, if it is turned up, turn it down. You have dual 2 ohm subs by your last post, this means that you are either running the amp at 1 ohm stereo if the subs are parallel wired(expect it to die a horrible death and take your subs with it). The other option is that you have series wired the subs to each channel. The subs will like this, the amp will like this and I like this. The amp you have will make that kind of power when it gets struck by Lightning and is going downhill with a tailwind with all the occupants rowing as fast as they can and the subs facing backwards for an extra push. You have good subs, give them a way better amp.

The gain is about 70% up. If I did look at replacing the amp what would you recommend to get? I am most likely going to get one more sub this summer, and please keep in mind i'm not rich. Thanks a lot for all your help!

You need an mono sub amp that makes about 1000 w rms @ 2ohm mono. Thus this amp may be either a 1 or 2 ohm mono stable cladd D sub amp like last years Rockford 1000bd. Wire the subs like this when the time comes. Wiring Option #2

Whoaa there turbo. Just because the gain is at 70 percent dosnt mean its not clipipng. Try doing a search for gain settings on this site.

Indeed, 70% up on input gain probably means the amp is clipping badly. How did you determne that to be the proper setting? ------------- Support the12volt.com
