Does any body have any experience with digital signal processors? If so, what brand and model is recommended. I am willing to spend in the neighborhood of $300.00

There are LOTS of different types of DSP-based systems out there.  What exactly are you hoping to accomplish with one?

I was going to have a graphic equalizer installed that I purchased on line. My installer said if it was his system, he wouldn't put it in. He said I would be better off  with a digital signal processor. I want to have more control of the various frequencies. I need to bring down some of the highs and increase the mid ranges.

OK, so you're talking about a digital EQ.  All the major manufacturers make those.  In your price range, check out the Pioneer DEQ-9200 or 7600, Audio Control DQT, or similar units from Clarion, Alpine, etc.
