illumination and dimmer control the brightness of the headunit display. switched +12v is the main power for the head unit and constant +12v is the memory of the head unit..

You don't have to connect the dimmer or the illumation if you don't want.  They are more of an convenience than a requirement.

ANTENNA...L.R....IS JUST THE LOCATION OF THE ANTENNA...CONSTANT IS YOUR 12VOLTS CONSTANTLY GOING TO THE RADIO...FOR MEMORY...ETC...SWITCHED IS POWER WHEN THE IGNITION IS TURNED TO EITHER ACC...OR ON(WHEN YOU TURN YOUR KEY)...THIS ACTUALLY TELLS RADIO TO TURN ON...AS FAR AS ILLUMINATION/DIMMER...SOME VEHICLES WILL ALLOW YOU TO DIM THE BRIGHTNESS ON THE RADIO W/ FACTORY DIMMER SWITCH(HAVE YOU EVER NOTICED WHEN YOU TURN ON YOUR HEAD LIGHTS ALL DASH LIGHTS DIM...?)IF YOUR CAR HAS THIS FEATURE IT WILL ALSO DIM BRIGHTNESS ON RADIO...HOPE THAT HELPS

I didnt hook up the dimmer, or illumination in my car and the cd player works fine, and lights up at night. In my car (91 cavalier) 12V constant was the battery, and 12V switched was the ACC+.

you are better off not worrying about hte dimmer and illumination wires.  make sure you cap them off though, dont let them touch ground!!  if you do try to hook them up and u dont do it right, you will mess up your light system.  so just leave them alone

Yeah, make sure you cap em. I didnt do that when i first installed my cd player, the thing started smokin, and i blew a fuse. No permanent damage, but still not cool.
