what exactly does it mean if your speakers are 2-way or 3-way?

It means that the range of frequencies is broken up between either 2 or 3 speakers rather than having one speaker do the entire task. A full range speaker or a whizzer cone plays all the frequencies at the same time. A 2 way speaker breaks sound up into two parts, lows to a woofer, highs to a tweeter. A 3 way speaker breaks it up further by adding a midrange that plays between these two speakers. An important concern here though is that the number of ways in a speaker does not necessarily mean that it will sound better. The finest sound possible comes from what is called a pointsource speaker, where all sound is produced from the same point.
