I have a kenwood excelon KAC-X401M Mono (1200w) amp and want to wire 2 solobaric l5's (4 ohm) subs. I was going to wire them in parallel so that they come down to 2 ohm each, but my question is what would the amp see in terms of impedance if I connected them both to the amp + to + and - to - .\

Thanks.

**EDIT**

The amp is 1200w x 1

to do that in parallel you would need 2-ohm DVC's, not 4.  Unless I'm mistaken, they don't make solo's in SVC anymore.

Your amp would see 1 ohm.

forget the first post, I read it wrong and the browser was too slow to stop it.

My fault, the subs are DVC 4 ohm.

So what would be the best way to wire these subs with this amp. Here are the specs on the amp:

Max Power Output (2 ohms)

1200 W x 1
Rated Power Output (+B = 12.0 V)
(4 ohms)

200 W x 1 (20 Hz ~ 20 kHz, 0.05 %THD)
(2 ohms)

400 W x 1 (1 kHz, 0.5 %THD)
Rated Power Output (+B = 14.4 V)
(4 ohms)

300 W x 1 (20 Hz ~ 20 kHz, 0.05 % THD)
(2 ohms)

600 W x 1 (1 kHz, 0.5 % THD)
Frequency Response (+ 0, -3 dB)

5 Hz ~ 50 kHz
Total Harmonic Distortion (Rated power)

Note
Sensitivity = Mini. ,Through LPF (30 kHz)

0.002 % (1 kHz)
Sensitivity (rated output)
(MAX.)

0.2 V
(MIN.)

5.0 V
Signal to Noise Ratio

105 dB
Input Impedance

10 kOhms
Damping Factor

More than 9900 (at sigma connect)
Low Pass Filter Frequency (24 dB/oct.)

50 ~ 200 Hz (variable)
Infrasonic Filter Frequency (24 dB/oct.)

15/ 20 / 25 / 30 Hz
Band Reject Filter Frequency

40 - 200 Hz (variable)
General
Operating Voltage

12.0 V (11 ~ 16 V allowable)
Current Consumption (4 ohms, +B =12.0 V, 10 % THD)

36 A
Dimensions (W x H x D)

272 x 64 x 380 mm 10-11/16 x 2-1/2 x 14-15/16inch
Weight

7.0 kg (15.5 Ibs)

Thanks again.

Yes, unfortunately you are totally screwed. The amp will make 1200w if it gets struck by Lightning and has life support. Your subs if they are dvc 4 ohm will either be a 1 ohm mono load (which will result in SAS - smelly amplifier syndrome) when wired in an all parallel circuit or will result in a 4 ohm mono load (great for the amp - bad for output) as it will only give you 300w rms in total or 150w rms per sub when wired in a series / parallel circuit. This is by far the best and safest way to wire this setup. Unfortunately it is far from the proper match of amp to subs, either change the amp (preffered) or change the subs. Here is how to wire your subs the best way on this amp.

P.S. Amp is for sale as of now!!

Thanks for the enlightenment Forbidden LOL LOL....

Solobaric L5 12"

I wanted to stick with Kenwood so I can control it from the head unit (KVT-915DVD). but if they don't make a suitable amp I will have to go with another brand.

You should try a JBL BP-600.1 instead. It actually puts out its rated power (and then some) and will be much better then anything with the name kenwood on it. Sorry if it won't be able to control it from your head-unit but it will sound soooo much better then a kenwood amp.

No don't be sorry.... I don't want to compromise quality just be able to control it from the h unit. I really appreciate honest suggestions.  I just need to know what will push these the best.

Thanks!!

If it's not too late, you could always exchange the DVC 4 ohm L5's with DVC 2 ohm L5's.  This way you can get a total load of 2 ohms with both in parallel and don't need to buy a new amp.  You could also buy a mono amp that's stable at 1 ohm.
