Bazooka Speakers

I recently picked up a pair ofBazooka 6 1/2" speakers dirt cheap. I was wondering if I could hook them up to a 200W 2 channel amp. The speakers are 100W max, but I doubt they can handle that much power. Would it be safe to hook them up to this amp? I cant provide any stats on the amp, its something my friend has lying around, it doesnt have a name on it, all I know is its 200W and its red (lol).

OK, think abou it.  You say the speakers are 100w max and the amp is 200w max.  So the amp is apparently more powerful than the speakers can handle, right?  You've answered your own question.  Be aware that "max" ratings are often exagerations of actual capability, and depending on the brand that "200 watt" amp might really be 25 watts per channel RMS...

COULD you use them together?  Of course.  But only if you know what you're doing as far as limiting the volume control so as not to blow the speakers.

This is what I would do:   Adjust the amp gain so that each speaker gets 14 AC volts, using a meter.  (That is if the speaker ohm rating is 4 ohms.)  That will give you 50 watts RMS to each speaker.  Use test signals in the range of 200 Hz to 2 kHz. for accuracy.  The adjustment is done with maximum clean input from the head unit, so have that level decided first.  It will probably fall in the range of 2/3 to 3/4 on the HU volume dial.  And, of course, that point will be the maximum you ever turn up the volume.

If after you do all that, you hear distortion, this will indicate that the amp is not as good as you think, and you will have to adjust the gain down until it sounds clear.

Cheap equipment promotes inventiveness.  Free is even better.

Thanks guys, I think its very possible the amp is not actually 200W.  I will try and set it up so as not to blow the speakers. But, even if I do, they where only $22 for the pair, so not a huge loss.

120V AC or 240V AC? Also do you put about a cup of fine bondo dust in the box before you do it (incase you don't know what will happen, if it sparks the bondo dust can explode, think flour mill)?
