Hi level converter

Have a stinger hi level converter to a Memphis 500D connected to a Memphis PR12SVC.  There is a lot of noise out of the speaker, and it pops when I turn my car off.  Today, it just started to rumble real low, and when I stopped to see what's up, I could smell smoke from inside the box.  Whats going on.  I didn't ground the stinger hi level, could that be the problem?  Is this a decent convertor?  It in a 2001 Jeep GC with factory deck.  Thanks.

which stinger high level converter, are there just speaker wires commming outta the box or are there terminals on the converter

Also it could be an amplifier clipping issue.  How'd you set the input gain?

Agreed.  It's not the converter.  It doesn't need to be grounded...the ground wires are there for the occasional original systems that are common grounded.  In fact, you wouldn't get any sound at all, if you had a common ground system, and the converter was not grounded.  Twist-tie the ground wires up and go to B:  Dyohn's suggestion on amp clipping.

I hope you ran the Hi Level converter because you had no other choice. They are not the best for SQ and can cause some interference or distortion in the signal. I take it you are still running the factory headunit?

Dyohn's suggestion is a great place to check, I strongly recommend you check your gain setting.

No, there are just the input speakers wires and the RCA outputs.  What should I have the gain on the amplifier set on?  I know that it is not cranked all the way up.

1. Turn down the gain on your sub amp all the way, 2. Put in a cd that you like that has good bass in it (like a kick drum), 3. Turn your head-unit's volume control up about 2/3 of the way, or as high as you will ever turn it up, 4. Turn the gain on your sub amp up slowly until you hear distortion coming from your sub(s) (distortion sounds like a popping or rattling coming from the sub, or mushy bass notes), 5. Turn down the gain just below the point of distortion. BTW don't crank up the bass boost either.  If you use it at all, use it moderately, and watch out for distortion (sometimes you can hear it from the drivers seat that well so be careful when you have the volume cranked).

The reason why I asked about the converter is because the one with terminals also has adjustable level controls and I have found that if those are turned to high it will cause the signal itself to clip much sooner, hence the reason I asked.

Okay, I will try adjusting the gain Friday, but I am getting married this weekend so it is kinda busy.  Would the gain make the speaker smell like that and smoke.  I didn't even have the volume turned up when it did it.  I have the Memphis 16-XO3 3 Way Electronic Crossover coming in a couple weeks so I just needed to get this fixed if it was the converter itself.  I will be using the converter for the input to the crossover.  Thanks to all for the help, and I will let you know how it turns out when I get back from my honeymoon.
