i've seen in some photos cars with amazing clean installation have sometimes subs upside down .. .. like the magnet is facing you and the face of the sub is hitting in a box or sumthin in the trunk!! .. whats the difference between subs facing up or down .. and when do you face it downwards .. is it just for the looks!!!

Just for looks, , there is no advantage, or disadvantage. Just only 1 change,.... instead of wireing + to + from amp to sub, , you have to wire it + to - , because now the sub is backwards, you need to make it fire outside the box.

So if you want to mount the sub upside down...I have a Dual Voice coil, You wire it opposite so that + on the amp is wired to - on the sub in series or do you wire one side normally and then wire it in parralel oppsite. I think that makes sense.

Wire your DVC coils normally. Run the wires to the terminals on the enclosure normally, too. Make only one switch, at the amp connectors.
------------- Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

i would experiment with the polarity switch. i have one out and one in and i thought that i had to change it on the one facing inward. nope i was wrong. i just hooked it up regular and it sounds a lot better. when you change the polarity, you change which direction the sub is gonna "bump" just mess with it awhile and youll figure it out

Hey mike, by doing that aren't you just basically creating an isobaric box? They should be wired out of phase of eachother if one is in the box and one is out of the box. Also you technically loose a little cone area inverting the sub, but the sub cools better. Sorry if it didn't make sense about the Isobaric, but ambien is kicking in and I can't feel my ______. Being a clinical insomniac sucks.

i hear you on that insomnia thing, had it for the past week. im sympathetic with you on that one man, feel sorry you have to deal with this all your life...it does add some time to your days tho. the nights seem longer than the days to me. wiring the subs inverted when inverted allows the two subs to still work with each other as to not loose the 3db increase of the added cone area and inverting the sub also "makes" the enclosure bigger as the basket is not inside and the cone area adds to the enclosure instead of taking away from it. Alpine Guy was correct as there is no advantage or disadvantage except there is a change in the box size which you can use to your advantage some times and there is also more chance that you will damage the sub due to objects hitting the magnet, basket, etc. make sure you follow stevdart's advice to a t because if you wire one voice coil normally and the other reversed you will have major losses in performance from the sub. yes if you inverted 1 sub out of 2 and they had a shared enclosure and did not switch the polarity on the inverted sub you would be creating an isobaric setup along with -3db and allowing the subs to hit lower fhz, as if the enclosure was twice the size it actually is.
as to experimenting with the polarity switch i personally don't think it is needed. if you do or don't switch the ploarity it will give you different types of setups with the subs. if you have only 1 sub then it is a little different story and you could damage the sub if you fired it into the box and did not reverse the polarity because then it is only compressing air and adding strain on the motor assm. which can lead to premature failure. ------------- Quad L Handyman services

yeah man, i had to put them that way cause i was trying to fit 2 12's right above the wheel well in the trunk. it was my first fiberglass box i made so when i hooked em up with one inverted with the polarity switched it sounded like s..t. i thought oh well i just made a crappy box and thats the last one ill ever do. then i changed the polarity and wow! ------------- always looking for new info and willing to give it
