I have never, ever heard anyone say firing into the corner is the best way always. Each vehicles interior combined with the equipment used and the desired sound wanted will dicate which is the best way to set up your install. What kind of car do you have?

AS long as the box is the correct volume and the box can be attached to the deck properly it should sound just fine. Be well aware though that the rear decks of most vehicles have a lot to do with the structural integrity of a vehicle. With more and more vehicles having fold down seats, the energy formed by lateral motion of the vehicle is transferred through the rear deck. You may also want to add some angle iron to the sides of the box and bolt this angle iron to the vehicle all the way across from side to side to help keep the back from flexing.
