Can someone explain the inverted box?

I've seen all these setups with the sub's upside down and was just curious.

A sub makes sound on either side of the speaker cone. Sometimes the sub is mounted upside down for looks, other times it is mounted upside down for lack of mounting depth in the box or because the box volume is critical and the displacement of the sub throws the box volume out the window. All in all it is up to the user and 99% of the people out there will never hear any difference at all.

Appearance, protecting the cone or enclosure size are the 3 reasons. I chose to invert because the Brahma looks very plain from the front, but from the rear she draws attention. Also, I do use my trunk, and I wanted to protect the driver. And furthermore, I do alot of reviewing and beta-testing. I find it easier to disconnect the wires from the sub with it inverted, rather than pulling my amp rack down and removing them there.

So, do you prefer this...

So when an enclosure size is recomended by the manufacturer, that size reflects displacement from the driver (correct..?). So how would you modify the enclosure volume since there would be no magnet or other parts inside there taking up space, or do you not modify it at all?

Typically the enclosure size reccomended does not take into account bracing or the driver's motor. Besides, it is rare that the amount of space the motor takes up would conversely affect the install if you inverted it in the same enclosure. Either way, build it the same... you will be cool
