Hey,

This may sound like a weird post. Maybe because it is. It's summer and me and my friend are bored. We want to find the lowest rated watt sub (preferably a 8" or 10") that is rated at 4 ohms. We are trying to test a myth we heard. We are going to take this sub and power it with more power...way more power than it can handle. Someone told me the VC will start on fire or some times the cone itself will blow off. This sounds interesting and a fun way to spend an afternoon. Ive been searching high and low for the cheapest sub. The cheapest is about 20 bucks and 250 watts max or so. If anyone can suggest a lower sub, that would be wonderful. I am willing to buy from any online site because i dont need any warrenty. This should be good!

Thanks for any advice in advance.

Rob

Powerhandling doesn't necessarily represent the "quality" of the sub.  After all what would you rather have, a sub that get's loud off 10 watts or a sub that gets just as loud off 1000 watts?  Also, power handling on subs is usually thermal, and changes when you put it in an enclosure.  So if you put our Brahma in a really small enclosure it would handle 2 kilowatts all day, but I watched my boss break one free air with only 250 watts.

Now usually when you put too much power through a voice coil, it simply opens like a fuse.  Sometimes you burn off all the varnish and the coil comes unwound.  But it won't start on fire.  And unless you cut the surround and spider, the cone shouldn't fly off.

i had the same fun, except i took an old 18" cv sub. the cone did actually fly off, we just kicked it back in and had some more fun with the sub.....ran 1000wrms to its 200wrms rating. the sub only lasted about 3 minutes. i now wish i had put it back into its enclosure instead of the free air setup.

if you really want to have fun with this break out the recorder and do this around noon as to see everything nicely.

A friend and me had a crappy X Blod Sony knockoff sub that we plugged into a wall outlet.  the darn thing only lasted 3 or 4 seconds before it self destructed.posted_image  It woulda been more fun if we had a box to put it in.

I've plugged quite a few subs into 110V wall outlets, The best one was plugging a Polk audio DB-10 into a wall and that damn thing lasted almost 5 minutes before smoking heavely and then popping really loud as the voice coil launched the cone out of the basket.

I used to break in L7's using the wall. When you are in a hurry and have a spl contest the next day theres nothing like a wall outlet to break stuff in quick.

Some friends of mine pluged 12" diamond (I believe an expensive one) into a wall outlet.  I don't how they wired the voice coils or stuff like that but I did get to see the aftermath.  The Sub had been abused and it was rattling or something like that so they decided to see what happened with massive 60 Hz power.  They describbed an insane POP that lasted about 1 or two seconds then clouds of smoke and fire before the braker blew in the garage.  The sub was TOASTED.  I mean toasted.  But there isn't a car audio amp that could push that kind of current so I don't think a way oversised amp would do that.  To finish it off they took turns with a 20 lb sledge hammer....    A moment of silence please.

If you wnated to toast a cheap sub just hook it to the battery, a good jolt of DC should do the trick.

Oh yeah look at radioshack for an old 12" "woofer" on clearance.  I think they are like 15 bucks that way.  Don't know the specks though.

Try wal mart. They have a VERY cheap subs, i think they are called extremes, or something like that, they come in bright yellow, so they should be easy to spot.  Also try a flea market. I bought a Boss 300W sub and box for $35.  Hooked the sub up to my 500W amp, blew it in about 10 minutes.  They also sell 6 1/2" tube subs at wal mart, they can handle a surprisingly  large amount of power. I have two in my car right now and i can tell one is gonna blow soon.  Also, after you blow the sub up make sure to burn the remains, because burning stuff is fun!

hey man, the walmart brand you guys are talkin about is VR3. Virtual Reality Soundlabs. very cheap equipment. I just thought i'd offer some advice, maybe you could save some cash. Does it necessarily have to be a sub? There are tons of things lying around the house that have speakers in them that can only handly .5-10 watts. u can blow up a crap load of stuff for free. Just a thought.

I suppose it doesnt have to be a sub, but it just seems cooler to burn up a sub than a little burt out mid from my dads 30 year old surround sound. There really is no logic behind this anyway haha.

Fun times...

Today we installed some speakers in this kids car and he said he didnt want the speakers and was going to throw them away...we took the 5 1/4 inch 4 ohm speakers and hooked them up to my 800 watt amp and the 1st one just jumped up in the air once and tried to hit a note, but came down smoking. The next one we let run a little bit and then turned it up. The VC melted, the cone almost started on fire, and there was smoke everywhere. Next we took a sub we ordered, a 150 watts max sub and again hooked it up to my amp and this one played for a while, but then the VC and surrounding brackets started to glow and get super hot. Once this happend, we burned holes in the cone and totally destroyed the VC. These babies were smoking as well. The sub did last for about 45 seconds though. We have one more 150 watt sub, and this ones going in the wall outlet...today was productive....3 speakers smoking in under 15 minutes!posted_image
