I have some infinity 6002i components in the back of my 94 civic. i'm powering them with my stock head unit which is rated at 20 watts rms. what is the reason for the distortion? Will an amp help remedy this problem at equivolent volumes? Can someone explain this to me? Thanks.

Galen

Most head units doesn't have much clean power available.  You would definitely be able to get more clean output with an outboard amp.

how much wattage would i need to get to power these speakers? I saw an alpine amp on ebay, i believe it was the mrp f320. 50w x4 would this work? or would an amp with say 30x4 be sufficient. Thanks

Check your speaker box, it should tell you how many watts rms or max the seakers can handle. Your best bet is to power them with as close to rms as possible.

ya ok. But what i'm really wondering is, does having an amp help reduce distortion at an equivolent volume on my 20 deck?

Yes.  What you are probably hearing is distortion and clipping from the small amps in your head unit.  Most heads put out around 12 to 23 watts before distortion (and yes, I am talking about those that advertise 45 or 50 watts X4.  They put out more like 18 to 20 watts of clean power.)  So adding an amplifier that can sustain higher power before distortion will definately clean up your sound.

The Infinity Reference 6002i coaxial will handle 60 watts RMS.  So a 50 watt per channel amplifier is perfect for them.

Even 30 from a separate decent amp would do wonders over head unit power.
