can this HUehicle dependency? be used outside of the vehicle or is there too much interconnectivity with the CPU and accesories to create an in vehicle dependency?

Some GM radio's require info on the data line to confirm they installed in the proper car.  Other are normal and don't require anything special to work, just the harness.

So let's say you bypass the data line and connect your 12 volt acc. wire on a new head unit directly to the fuse box.  Will it affect anything else on the vehicle or does the data line need to be connected to factory radio at all times?

what exactly is the question?  whether you can use a factory HU from this vehicle outside the car? (no) or whether you can use another radio in this vehicle? (yes, with the proper data interfaces)

What exactly is the information on the data line of an HV Stereo?  I know the door chimes, but what else?  I'm asking because my brother-in-law wants to hook his old cd player(out of the truck he wrecked) up in his new truck.  It's a pioneer or JVC, I'm not sure.  I know it's not HV.  He's wanting to bypass the data line if possible but I told him I didn't know what information was on that data line.  Any help would be appreciated.
