Can you take a 5 channel amp and run the front channels at 4ohms and then run the sub channel at say 2? I'm looking at a zx8000 or a jl 500/5. I know it doesn't matter with the jl, but the hifionics it will.

Yes you can, you can also do that with a four channel amp. That is the normal way to do it with a 5 channel, actually, because the 5th channel is a separate mono amp, and most people run their subs at 2 ohms. A four channel amp allows it, too, because each half is separate from the other.

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.
the only thing to keep in mind is that all five channels share a common power supply section in most amps...if you overload the sub channel you run the risk of overloading and /or blowing that one channel or worse the power supply which will of course kill all 5 channels.....although they certainly have a place, i usually dissuade people from buying a 5 channel amp for just this reason.... you lose one channel, you lose verything..... i try to recommend a separate, dedicated sub amp
