What front aftermarket speaker size will fit in the 97-01 Prelude? The OEM ones are 6.5...but I hear that with aftermarkets you can only fit about 5 1/4. Is this true? Does anyone fit a 6.5 speaker in a prelude?
Depends on the depth of the 6.5" speaker. Some will fit while other's will not because of them being too deep. Coaxials will most likely fit but components will be possible.

Pull out an OEM speaker, put the window down, and measure the distance from the mounting hole to the glass to find the top-mount depth. Also, find how much space there is forward to the grill. There are spacers available if you have the forward room to mount an aftermarket speaker.

I don't understand exactly how the mounting depth is measured. Today I measured my stock speakers from the back of the magnet to the front of the speaker, right exactly where it ends. I'm not sure if I measured them correctly, but they came out at 2 1/8 inches. There is some metal bar in the door that will not let me go anywhere near the window. I think I have about 2.5 inches to that bar. I probably will get myself Polk DB650 speakers. At the site they have the top mounting depth and the bottom depth...what's the difference between the two? Here is the page if you want to take a look and tell me:

But both seem to be less than 2.5...I hope!
Top mounting depth is what you want. Bottom mounting sometimes applies to rear deck speakers that are mounted from underneath. Use a tape measure and measure from the hole in the door to the metal bar. That will give you the top mount depth you have to work with. And as I said before, you can add another half inch or an inch by using a 6.5 round spacer, where the spacer is mounted to the door and then the speaker is mounted to the spacer.
BTW, your measurement of the OEM speaker showed you the bottom-mount depth.

Thanks, I think they should fit fine then
