Just a quick question. A friend of mine would like me to install a head unit into their 2002 cavalier. I was just wondering if there were any necessary harnesses or intallation kits that i would need?? Is there a website out there that gives install instructions on different cars?? And has anyone ever encountered any problems installing a basic head unit into this car??

That car has a data bus 2 system. That means that to do the job properly you need to buy a factory relocation harness which lets you run the nessasary wires to the back of the car and leave the factory deck hooked up in the trunk, while the new deck runs the stereo in the dash. You can get a module that can be used instead of the factory deck but its cheaper to use the deck. The reason why you do this is that when you remove a component from the data bus 2 system, like the factory deck, you can send the computer into disarea. The check engine light could and probally will come on and the air bag system could not arm. Those are both very bad things. Thats why the factory deck should be hooked up in the trunk. Its not a very fun car to do.

it's the lesser of two evils.... buy the Metra GMRC-01 and be done with it or use the relocation harness and door chime speaker and relocate the factory radio.... if you are paying a shop to do it it will cost about the same since the extra labour to relocate the radio ( including the T harness and the chime speaker ) is about the difference in price from just buying the data interface
